Psilocybin in Illinois: current status
Illinois law treats psilocybin seriously. Under 720 ILCS 570/204, it's a Schedule I substance. Possession of any amount is a class 4 felony, carrying 1 to 3 years in prison and fines up to $25,000. Possession with intent to deliver escalates to class 1 felony territory, with mandatory minimum sentences in some cases.
Illinois has been more progressive on cannabis than psychedelics. The state legalized recreational cannabis in 2020 and has since built a robust regulated market. That cannabis reform created a political infrastructure and advocacy network that could eventually extend to psychedelics, but it hasn't happened yet.
A handful of Illinois state representatives have expressed interest in psychedelic research legislation, particularly following the FDA's breakthrough therapy designation for psilocybin in treating depression. Chicago's City Council has had informal discussions about following Denver and Oakland's lead on decriminalization. But as of mid-2026, nothing has been passed at any level of government.
In practice, standalone psilocybin possession charges are less common in Cook County (Chicago) than in downstate counties, but the risk is real everywhere in Illinois.
Entheogenic gummies: the legal alternative
Wunder's products contain no psilocybin. The active ingredients , muscimol (amanita muscaria extract), kava, blue lotus, and kanna , are not controlled substances under Illinois law.
Illinois drug schedules (720 ILCS 570/204 through 570/214) list specific chemical compounds. Muscimol, kavalactones, aporphine, and mesembrine are not on any of these lists. The state's lookalike substance provision is narrow and does not extend to these botanicals.
For Illinois consumers, this means entheogenic gummies occupy a completely different legal category than psilocybin gummies. One is a felony. The other is a legal supplement.
Are Wunder products legal in Illinois?
Yes. Wunder ships to all Illinois addresses, including Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Springfield, Peoria, and everywhere else in the state.
The products contain no psilocybin, no THC, and no scheduled compounds. Wunder's entheogenic nootropic blend is built from legal botanicals that are unscheduled at both the state and federal level.
Standard precautions: don't drive after consuming, and don't carry these products into federal buildings, courthouses, or airports.
What to look for when buying in Illinois
Illinois has a large market of online and in-person supplement retailers. Not all of them are transparent. Three questions to ask:
- Does the product label name a specific active compound with a milligram amount? A label that says "mushroom blend" without details doesn't give you enough information to verify what you're buying.
- Has the brand published third-party lab results? Legitimate companies in the psychoactive supplement space make their COAs public. If they don't, that's a decision, not an oversight.
- Is the website clear that the product contains no psilocybin? Brands selling legal entheogenic products are careful about their language for legal reasons. If a brand is vague, there's usually a reason.
